NOTES IN THE MARGINS OF A MAJOR WORK

An encyclopaedia or handbook should be an accurate record of the state and the past of a discipline. On this score the handbooks of social and cultural anthropology in Europe and America fall short of the mark by omission, habitually and chronically neglecting anthropology in the rest of the world. But anthropology outside Europe and America is sizeable and too good to ignore. Such manuals do not reveal that there are traditions in anthropology with a history of one hundred years and more. For instance, academic anthropology became an academic discipline in Japan in 1893, and centennials are approaching in Mexico (2010) and the Philippines (2014).
