The spur for this paper arises from the nature of our enquiry, a novelty born not of topic or theoretical stance but of a method which brought three anthropologists together to research a single project: the study of concepts of dependency among fanning families in the north of England. The successful outcome of an ESRC research proposal, the project draws on the work of two of these anthropologists who had previously conducted independent studies among the members of different social categories - children and older adults (Hockey and James 1993).
