How times have moved on! Twenty-four years ago at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, as part of a mixed media season on 'The body as a medium of expression', we thought it daring to schedule a short dance piece to precede an evening lecture by a middle-aged American anthropologist on 'race and the body'. In Blue -choreographed by Richard Alston - a young, nude Englishman, alone on an otherwise empty stage, found a bucket full of royal blue paint and started to smear his body with hand-prints. Gradually his body became bluer and bluer, and gradually his movements more contorted and agonized. I cannot remember the denouement, but poor Dr John Szwed managed the transition to a normal academic lecture style with some aplomb.
