Science Is a Never-Ending Quest: A Brief Critique and Appreciation of Stromboli IV

Twenty years ago, an intrepid band of many of the world's leading scientists and clinicians, all experts in cancer and aging, gathered under the watchful eye of "Mother Stromboli," the nearby volcano who constantly and audibly grumbled her skepticism about the august proceedings being held below. Each expert proved (scientifically) that one or another (or several) peptides, hormones, cytokines, trace elements, vitamins, curious chemical compounds, or behavioral procedures could definitely reverse aging and/or cancer. In summarizing that meeting, I drew up the entire list as ingredients for an infallible prescription, called the "Stromboli cocktail," which can be seen in Neuroimmunomodulation: State of the Art (Vol. 521 of the Annals). The ingredients included volcanic ash, thymus—whole, desiccated calf, and all fractions—haloperidol, SOD, selected catalases, activated charcoal, epsom salts, butterfly wings, milk of magnesia, beta-carotene, vitamin A, melatonin, argi-nine, thioproline, PCPA, vitamin E, enkephalins, zinc, selenium, DHEA, estrogens, prolactin, growth hormone, 3,4-dimethyl pyridine, and levamisole. It was noted that this cocktail should be taken with social support, exercise, sex, and electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus. Several years later, at the second Stromboli congress, more experts added at least twelve more (proven and guaranteed) substances to make the second Stromboli cocktail," consisting now of 42 ingredients, for which I proposed the structural formula seen in Figure 1.
