It is a pleasure to pay tribute to Bernard G. Steinetz, in recognition of his more than 50 years of research contributions and other service to the relaxin field. Dr. Steinetz' research on relaxin is remarkable because it is uniquely diverse and because it demonstrates an unprecedented commitment to the study of the hormone. When Bernie began relaxin research, little was known about either the chemistry or the biological actions of relaxin. Relaxin was known to be a small protein that promoted elongation of the intcrpubic ligament in guinea pigs and mice, and crude preparations ol the hormone inhibited spontaneous uterine contractility in guinea pigs. Bernie has contributed 70 peer-reviewed publications and 26 publications in books and symposia on relaxin. Dr. Steinetz is noteworthy not only for his long-term engagement in relaxin research but also for his productivity in other research areas. The first 30 years of Dr. Steinetz' career were with two pharmaceutical companies that initiated and then summarily dropped relaxin projects.
