A PASSIVE PERSONAL DUST MONITOR

A new passive monitor for personal sampling of dust is described. Dust is deposited onto three transparent sticky foils facing up, forward and down by gravitation and Brownian and turbulent diffusion, and analysed by light extinction measurements. From a field test, statistical models for mass concentrations are developed together with an outlier test and, from a wind tunnel test and an earlier model, a fluid mechanical model for deposition velocities is established. The unbiased volume weighted diameter distribution can be found from microscopical analysis. The monitor offers new opportunities in large surveys where quantitative assessment of dust is performed.
