The root lesion nematode was recognised as a yield-limitingndisease on the Darling Downs in the late 1970s. The areanaffected with this disease was later found to include a numbernof heavy soil regions in northern New South Wales. Yieldnlosses are variety-dependent, varying with the level ofntolerance in the target variety, but can range up to 80% in thenmost intolerant varieties.nPotam 70 was observed to remain green in trials grown onnland subsequently diagnosed as infected with the root lesionnnematode. Further experiments demonstrated the superiorntolerance of Potam. Consequently, this Mexican variety wasnused as the donor parent in a backcross breeding project tontransfer nematode resistance to Cook.nF, plants from Potam 70 * Cook were crossed to Cook, andnsingle-plant selection for plant type was exercised in the BC Fn1 . 2 generation. Seed from the single-plant selections was grown Inn4-row plots in a nematode-infested field at Formartin and in thenconcurrent crossing nursery at the Queensland Wheat ResearchnInstitute. Tolerant plots were determined before heading andnthese were further backcrossed to Cook during spring; a thirdnbackcross was made during the following summer.
