ICP-MS combined with electrothermal vaporization (ETV) has excellent absolute detection limits, and hence allows the determination of trace elements in very minute amounts of samples. In the present work, ETV/ICP-MS was applied to the analysis of human hair for As and Se. A 0.50-mg weight of a sample was decomposed with 10 μl of 14 mol l~-1 HNO_3 and 2 ml of 30/100 H_2O_2 in a PTFE high-pressure decomposition vessel. The resulting solution was mixed with 25 μl of a 1 μmol l~-1 KMnO4 solution and evaporated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in 500 μl of 1 mol l~-1 HNO_3, and a 5-ml aliquot of the solution was placed on a tungsten filament.
