Developing the Next Generation of Biostatisticians

The ASA Biometrics Section invites applications for fund-ing to support projects developing innovative outreach projects focused on enhancing awareness of biostatis-tics among quantitatively talented U.S. students. It is particularly interested in projects that encourage students to pursue advanced training in biostatistics. The Section anticipates funding up to two projects, with total funding of up to $2,000 per project. All investigators are encouraged to apply. In 2004, the Section provided funding for four outreach projects: (ⅰ) development and pilot-testing of materials for classroom use and a workshop to introduce them to mathematics and biology instructors at liberal arts colleges in the mid-Atlantic region; (ⅱ) a college/university visitation program in Texas and Louisiana to raise awareness of biostatistics; (ⅲ) a program to highlight advanced biostatistics training at conferences for undergraduate mathematics students in the upper Midwest; and (ⅳ) an ongoing initiative to construct a metaweb page for the Biometrics Section home page to consolidate links to institutions offering biostatistics train-ing.
