FIU Conference on Statistical Methods a Success

A one-day conference on statistical methods was held March 28, 2008, at Wertheim Conservatory, Florida International University (FIU). The second such conference involved seven speakers for three sessions. Sneh Gulati headed the first and last sessions, while B. M. Golam Kibria ran the second. Alan Agresti of the University of Florida was the keynote speaker, presenting a paper titled "Good Confidence Intervals for Categorical Data Analyses." His talk focused on survey confidence intervals that perform well for estimating parameters used in categorical data analysis. It was informative, and the presentation was wonderful. Hugh Willoughby, distinguished research professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at FIU was the distinguished speaker and presented a paper titled "U.S. Hurricane Death and Destruction, 1900-2006." He gave an overview of the major hurricanes, their future effect on the United States, their landfalls, and corresponding damages and loss of lives. His talk was priceless.
