What about this position appealed to you? As an academic, my primary research interests have been applied statistics and education policy. NCES, as the federal statistical agency for education, is the perfect nexus of both. In addition, I was fortunate enough to serve as deputy commissioner from 2006-2008, so I knew a lot about both our outstanding staff and our fascinating mission to collect data on all aspects of the condition of education in the United States.
