Ulysses S. Grant: Soldier, Statesman... and Artist?

The artistic side of Ulysses S. Grant is revealed in this watercolor he painted while a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy. Grant signed the 16-by 11-inch painting with his first two initials "U.H.," for "Ulysses Hiram." It was at West Point that Grant's middle name and initial changed through an administrative error that he let stand. During a visit to Cincinnati in 1842, Grant gave the painting to Kate Lowe, whom he had met on a canal boat.
