New U.S. postage stamps feature Sumter, Manassas

The first two postage stamps in a series marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War were to be issued April 12, according to the U.S. Postal Service. The stamp commemorating Fort Sumter is a reproduction of an 1861 Currier & Ives lithograph, Bombardment of Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor. The stamp commemorating the First Battle of Manassas reproduces a 1964 painting by Sidney E. King titled The Capture of Rickett's Battery, depicting fierce fighting over a Union battery. Each year through 2015, two Civil War commemorative stamps will be issued, with souvenir sheets available for collectors.
