Earthquake damages church tied to Lee

A Culpeper, Va., church with Civil War connections was damaged by the August earthquake that rocked the East Coast and played havoc with the town's historic district. Building inspectors said St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart are said to have worshiped before venturing to Gettysburg, suffered cracks in the sanctuary walls but could be saved. The 1858 Levy Building nearby, however, was beyond repair because of extensive damage to the brickwork. Damage to the church was estimated at $700,000 to $1 million.
