Less than a month before he died on July 1,1905, John Hay dreamed of Abraham Lincoln. In the dream, Hay was not feeling well, but the president told him not to worry, that there was little work to do except to answer two letters. Hay recorded that the "dream was one of overpowering melancholy." Hay was only 22 years old in 1861 when he left Springfield, Ill., for Washington, D.C., to serve as one of Lincoln's private secretaries along with John George Nicolay.
