The war's over in Minnesota

Apparently smoke, flames, gunfire, blood, gore and death don't exactly say "progress" to Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, who this past winter questioned the propriety of five Civil War murals that adorn an ornate conference room in the state capital. Dayton acknowledged the historical significance of the paintings, but asked, "Should that be what dictates how we represent the capital...to visitors over the next 50 to 100 years?" The Civil War was still relatively fresh in the minds of Minnesotans when the capital was completed, murals included, in 1906. The state is currently refurbishing the building at a cost of $270 million, a task that will take at least two more years of work.
