Black & Veatch Tackles Tough Issues With Two United Kingdom Projects

A recently completed design and construction supervision project for the South East Water pipeline in mid-Sussex, England, proved very challenging for Black & Veatch. The project engineers with the consulting company were faced with the presence of unex-ploded ordance (UXO) in an area used for military training during World War I and II. Also know as munitions and explosives of concern (MEC), unex-ploded ordnance are explosive weapons, such as bombs, bullets, shells, grenades, land mines and naval mines, that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation, even many decades after they were used or discarded. In addition to the obvious danger of explosion, buried UXO also pose the risk of environmental contamination.
