After the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) released the first WaterSense product labeling specification for high-efficiency toilets in January 2007, program partners helped consumers save more than 277 mil gal of water that year. With the potential water savings emerging across many more product categories, this question about WaterSense is often asked: How does USEPA decide which products to label? In a perfect world with unlimited resources, WaterSense would be able to quickly address every product category with available water efficient models. However, USEPA needs to make tough decisions and set priorities as to which categories will be evaluated and considered for the WaterSense label. This article describes how the agency makes these decisions.
