Managing leaks using flow step-testing, network modeling,and field measurement

摘要

Underground leakage in distribution systems is a significant contributor to water loss. Large volumes of leaks can result in major financial, supply, and pressure losses as well as contaminant intrusion that may lead to detrimental or even fatal water quality episodes. Therefore, leak management is essential not only for conserving a precious natural resource, but also for reducing excessive energy consumption and safeguarding water quality. The powerful and reliable method presented in this article combines flow step-testing and network modeling to pinpoint leaks through direct application of hydraulic analysis and field-testing. Today, many water providers use hydraulic network models to plan improvements and operate better systems. They can now realize additional benefits of network modeling and field flow step-testing to identify leaking pipes for subsequent replacement or repair. By improving their efficacy in locating distribution system areas with excessive leaks, utilities will be better able to plan, design, and implement sound and cost-effective leak management.
