Committee Report: Design and Installation of Cross-linked Polyethylene (PEX) Pipe in Accordance with AWWA C904

Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe described by AWWA C904 (2006a) is typically used for underground water service lines from a public water system. PEX pipe connects to standard compression joint valves and fittings and is corrosion-resistant. PEX pipe has a history of successful use in Europe where it was extensively tested for durability and material performance. It was introduced in North America in 1984 when it was first used for radiant floor heating. More recently, PEX pipe has been used for residential water distribution systems (NAHB Research Center, 2006).
