Those pipelines are now more than 60 years old; just like the songs, some are being replaced with new material. The emphasis on evaluating the condition of buried infrastructure has increased during the past decade. Dawn of the Replacement Era: Reinvesting in Drinking Water Infrastructure (AWWA, 2001) was one of the first reports to outline the need for condition assessment and reinvesting in pipelines. During the past 10 years, US utilities have increasingly focused on the remaining service life of buried pipelines.
