am writing this column around Thanksgiving, so I am taking a step back from the good-time feeling of the three "F's" (family, food, and football) and taking a look at what is going on in Washington these days. It's not a pretty picture. The super committee has failed in its effort to come up with $1.5 trillion in budget cuts. To help jog your memory, the super committee was composed of six Democrats and six Republicans, with one from each party serving as cochair. The super committee was one of the three major outcomes from the Budget Control Act of 2011 (PL 112-25) passed this summer. This legislation did the following: • increased the nation's borrowing cap by $2.4 trillion to a total of $16.7 trillion (enough to keep the government afloat through the 2012 elections).
