Oxnard, Calif., like many other cities, must import water from other sources - an expensive practice that is becoming more difficult to maintain because of the growing demands being made on supplies already stretched thin. In this month's Current Issues department (page 24), Frenkel and Reynolds describe how Oxnard turned to desalination of a brackish groundwater to augment its water supply. Using this technology, the city has decreased energy use and reduced the amount of water it must import.
