'YOURS, THIRSTY FOR HONESTY, FERENCZI': SOME BACKGROUND TO SANDOR FERENCZI'S PURSUIT OF MUTUALITY

Our theories as well as our individual approaches to psychoanalytic praxis are expressions of our personal ideals and visions of the world, of what we believe it is to live a good life, of what we value in human experience and human relationships. Psychoanalytic theory and technique is inevitably embedded in our ultimate values, and therefore variations among analytic approaches need to be understood at least partially as rooted in differences in what analysts are ultimately after in life. Our way of thinking and working psychoanalytically is an expression of who we are as people. This paper examines some of the differences between the clinical approaches of Freud and Ferenczi as an example of this assertion. Sandor Ferenczi's clinical experiments with mutuality and his theoretical proposals regarding trauma are among the most controversial innovations in the history of psychoanalysis. His therapeutic investigations led to theoretical, clinical, and technical discoveries concerning trauma, dissociation, the use of countertransference, and enactment within the transference-countertransference matrix. These still controversial ideas continue to occupy center stage in contemporary debates about psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic technique (see Aron and Harris, 1993).
