In April, Tony Blair announced an extension of the Prime Minister's Initiative. The PMI, launched in 1999, aimed to attract an extra 50,000 overseas students to study in the UK. Amazingly, by 2004 the increase was double the target. It is not often that government initiatives are so successful, so it is no surprise that the PMI is to be extended. The new target is for a further 100,000 non-EU overseas students to study in the UK by 2011.
