Snow still lies on the southern hills of the Lake District to my right as I get my first view of Barrow-in-Furness. Up ahead, the vast Devonshire Dock Hall, built to construct the Vanguard class Trident submarines, towers over the town. And well it might: submarines have been built on the cold, windswept Furness peninsula for more than 100 years. And, although the days when Vickers employed a third of the town's population are long gone, the shipyard still employs 3,000. Vickerstown, a collection of former workers' houses, stands as testament to the shipyard's importance in the community.
