Salute the sailors, not the cannon

Nicolas Marrs writes about British ships at Trafalgar being equipped with "flintlock cannon" that were "more advanced" than the weapons used by the French (Letters, PE 14 December). I wondered what evidence Marrs has that the French did not use cannon locks at Trafalgar? By this time "flintlocks" were being called "cannon locks".
