In recent decades, the compounding of customized drug preparations by pharmacists has increased.1 This increase in pharmacy compounding could partly be attributed to a renewed interest in providing individualized patient care, perhaps motivated by the inability of manufactured drugs to meet specific patient needs and by the desire to further improve patient quality of life. Historic drug shortages and discontinuations may also have contributed to the increase in pharmacy compounding. In recent decades, the trend towards home health care for cost containment and patient comfort has occasionally required individualized patient therapies, including the preparation of customized dosage formulations through pharmacy compounding.
