FDA approves canakinumab for rare inflammatory disorders

Novartis in mid-June announced the approval of canakinumab, or Ilaris, for the treatment of the cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS) known as familial cold autoinflammatory syndrome and Muckle-Wells syndrome in patients age four years or older.rnThe two syndromes are serious inherited autoimmune inflammatory disorders that are believed to result from cryopyrin-activated overproduction of interleukin-1β (IL-1β). According to FDA, about 300 people in the United States suffer from these syndromes.
