The first of our featured articles offers some insights about the development of medical technology, many of the great breakthroughs of our time include episodes where one chemical substance long heralded as a treatment for some disease suddenly is adopted by physicians as a treatment for another chronic disease or ailment. This means that a drug that has been approved for one use gets adopted for another (perhaps entirely different) use. But the new use has not been tested in the usual ways. Somehow the system seems to work well.
