Keeping Hydrocarbons Clean

There are a lot of new converts to hydrocarbon cleaning processes, many of whom have switched to a high-flashpoint solvent. This month's column applies to all hydrocarbon solvents, whether low- or high-flashpoint. The age-old question about hydrocarbons is whether one needs to distill or not. That's the wrong question to ask, however. The answer is simply that if you want clean clothes, you need clean solvent―and if you want clean solvent, you must remove the solvent-soluble soils from it. If they are not removed, the clothing will start removing them for you, producing rede-position and a greasy, peculiar, body-odor smell.
