Buttons Present Familiar Problems

In previous issues, we discussed many conditions found in the skins used to manufacture suede and leather garments. Most of these conditions may have been unfamiliar to you, since they were the result of either what the animal did to the skin while still using it, or what the tanner or manufacturer did in processing or sewing the skins together to form a garment. But garment manufacturers do many of the same things to suedes and leathers that they do to cloth. Don't think you only know how to accept cloth garments at the counter― many of the same rules apply to suedes and leathers. When a suede or leather garment comes in, look it over just like you would a cloth garment. Check the same things you would check on a cloth garment to avoid potential problems and the claims that could result. Start by checking for buttons that may melt. Some can dissolve completely in solvent so all that's left is thread. If this happens, you're lucky―all you will have to do is replace the melted buttons with drycleanable buttons.
