The Eight Myths of Restoration

Most drycleaners avoid specialty services. Excuses abound: It takes too much room. It's too tricky. You need special equipment. Commercial accounts are slow to pay. But restoration work is a viable sideline, and some drycleaners do a sizeable portion of their volume in it. Furthermore, they make money at it. Restoration work is processing garments that have been damaged in a disaster. The garments have typically survived a fire or flood; having been damaged, it is the restorer's job to bring them back to new. I have personal experience with restoration. In 1989, a fire broke out at our house at 3:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning. The barn, both cars and half the house were destroyed before the local fire department could put out the blaze. The clothing, draperies and linens that weren't completely destroyed were damaged by smoke and water.
