I joined American Drycleaner in 1959, just as perc began to dominate the drycleaning market. Self-contained package plants in strip shopping areas expanded the marketplace to almost double its size, and brought fast and convenient service to a growing, affluent consumer market. I had the privilege of personally reporting on the early coin-operated drycleaning machines. At a demonstration of these machines in a Chicago coin laundry, I casually tossed a cashmere scarf into the basket and watched the door to the unit shut. Imagine my consternation when I discovered that my scarf had been torn into shreds!
