Over the last years, the synthesis of higher alcohols from mixtures of H2 and CO (syngas) has drawn considerable interest due to the increasing demand for octane boosters, which can not cause any environmental problems. Among the higher alcohols, isobutanol is the most important product, which represents a potential gasoline additive and a precursor for obtaining isobutene, in turn converted to methyl tertbutyl ether (MTBE) or to isooctane (via isobutene dimerization and successive hydrogenation).
