Durable Pt-free membrane electrode assembly for high temperature PEMFC

For the market expansion of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system, decrease or replacement of Pt in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) has been pursued for a several decades, because of highly expensive cost and rare resource for Pt. While several candidates for the cathode, i. e. oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) based on the Pd alloy have been suggested, the durability of Pd alloy under acidic condition is not enough to fulfill the requirement of MEA. In this presentation, the improvement of durability and activity of Pd alloy catalyst under acidic environment will be discussed. Furthermore, the durability of the Pt-free MEA with improved Pd alloy catalyst and novel non-Pt anode catalyst will be presented, which can be operated over than 1000h at 150°C for high temperature PEMFC.
