Solvent-based technology for CO2 separation is the leading technology expected to be commercially available for carbon capture from coal-fired power plants to realize the Vision 21 plan. SRI International (SRI) is developing a novel mixed-salt-based solvent technology that can be ready for validation sooner than the other second-generation solvent technologies. The new technology is based on off-the-shelf low-cost alkaline salts that react with CO2 and has a low reboiler duty for regeneration (< 800 Btu/lb) and release of CO2 at high pressure. Bench-scale data show that the technology can capture > 99% CO2, and has very high cyclic CO2 loading capacity. The advantages of this technology include the reduced reboiler duty for solvent regeneration, use of low-cost material, and its capability for co-capturing other acid gases. The mixed-salt technology shows great promise and can be ready by 2020 with a cost of < $20/t CO2.
