Global scientific community has turned its attention fornproduction of biofuels, and very intense research is pursued in thisndirection last decade. Biofuels gained huge cynosure as this energy isnrenewable and sustainable unlike fossil fuels which has limitednabundance and environmentally non-benign. Diesel and jet-fuel arenthe two types, which are in most demand. Diesel and jet fuelsntypically contain carbon chain lengths between 10-20. These fuelsncan be produced when we have abundant furans available in the formnof alkylated furans such as methyl furans or furfurals. Methyl furansnand furfurals can be converted to jet or diesel fuels through reactionsnsuch as hydroxyalkylation, alkylation or aldol condensation followednby hydrolysis and hydrodeoxygenation. Thus furans serve asnsynthetic precursors for jet and diesel fuels. To date, very limitednresults have been published for the production of furans fromnbiomass. Conventionally, furans are produced from biomass usingnsolid acid catalysts through a biphasic batch reactor.1 For the firstntime, we report selective production of furans from catalytic fastnpyrolysis of biomass using molybdenum incorporated threendimensionally pore structured (KIT-5) mesoporous silica asnheterogeneous catalyst.2,3
