R Jonathan Armistead, Hy-Vee Inc,. Columbia, Missouri, won the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association's thirteenth annual Cake-Decorating Challenge held at the Dairy-Deli-Bake 2008 seminar and expo in New Orleans, LA, June 1-3. The event pits three of the nation's top in-store bakery decorators against each other for three days of competition. Day one features wedding cakes. On day two, each contestant must fill an eight-foot bakery case with cakes. On the last day, they must create a freestyle design for each of three categories: special occasion, a theme or event, and to illustrate the IDDBA show theme, "Super Mardi Gras." The three finalists are chosen from a national field by judged portfolios submitted before the event.
