As part of a 50-designer international effort to honor Mother's Day, Robin Apted based her design on childhood memories of growing up in the country. "The aged watering can with the rambling roses and wild berries is exactly the kind of thing you would see on our old porch," Robin said. Although the flowers are meant to be the focal point, she found herself trying a new technique when it came to the watering can. "Normally I cover my cakes with one piece of fondant, but this time I used a fondant wrapping technique. I also laid strips of gumpaste on the ganache under the fondant, so the whole watering-can surface would be one piece, as opposed to covering with fondant then extruding strips and gluing them onto the surface."
