摘要

At some points in the book, for example, any artistic representation of a human head or even a face becomes a metaphor for a trophy head, and archaeological sites and contexts that lack heads (e.g., niches in the Temple of the Crossed Hands at the highland preceramic site of Kotosh) are suggested to have once had them, even though there is no evidence to support it. There is substantial ethnohistoric and archaeological evidence for the political use of heads, including Inca practices of modifying the heads (as well as skin and other body parts) of defeated enemies for public display (reviewed in detail by Ogburn 2007), prisoner execution and body mutilation in northern coastal Peru, and recently discovered Wan trophy heads from the site of Conchapata (Tung 2008).
