Conflict Resolution at a Classical Tempo: In Conducting Their Proceedings, the Neutral and the Maestro Share Common Ground

Each summer brings a special musical event to Aspen, Colo. The 59-year-old Aspen Music Festival overflows with the genius of faculty, soloists, and orchestra members, the passion of student conductors and musicians from all over the world, and some outstanding opera thrown in for good measure. Last summer's festival focused on the life and times of Ludwig van Beethoven and the power of his music, as well as the power of jazz-displaying the joinder of new and old, classical and jazz, soothing and dissonant. It was continuing education at its finest. There are analogies to be drawn, and similarities readily observed, between Aspen-level musical artistry, and the mastery of alternative dispute resolution's best practices.
