In the 20 years since the collapse of Pan Am, we have been left with vivid images of a truly American aeronautical institution. As the premier international US airline, Pan Am personified the highest standards of cabin service. Worldwide city ticket offices were staffed with Pan Am employees who were often more familiar with the region's history and resources than the locals. The drive of Pan Am's visionary chief Juan Trippe and his staff enabled the airline to enjoy many 'firsts'. Among them: the first airline to cross the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; and ultimately the achievement of a round-the-world flight. Pan Am's formidable clout pushed America into the jet age with its tremendous influence in the design of both the Boeing 707 and, later, the majestic 747 wide-body.
