A few miles away at New York International Airport, then known as Idlewild (IDL), now named John F Kennedy (JFK), the runways and taxiways were bustling with arriving and departing traffic. Shortly after 0900 Eastern Standard Time, American Airlines Flight One (AA1) was preparing for departure to Los Angeles (LAX).
