摘要

The first known mariner to sight the Bermuda Islands was Spaniard Juan de Bermudez, possibly in 1505. At that time the region's skies were dominated by the cahow (Pterodroma cahow)―a bird of the petrel family that is unique to Bermuda. The fearless cahows' perceived aggression toward early visitors, coupled with treacherous reefs and sometimes-raging seas, gave Bermuda the epithet 'Isle of the Devils'. Bermuda was not permanently inhabited until 1612, three years after the British vessel Sea Venture, under the command of Sir George Somers, became separated during a hurricane from a flotilla bound for Jamestown, Virginia. The badly damaged Sea Venture was forced to run aground on Bermuda, which consequently became known by the alternative name of 'Somers Isles'―and even 'Virgineola' for a while―with Britain establishing an enduring presence there.
