Since World War II, the open-air desert storage depots in the USA, which have housed vast numbers of military and civil aircraft, have been sites of fascination for anyone interested in aviation. Initially, the large 'boneyards' in Arizona at the former Kingman Army Air Field (Storage Depot 41 of the War Assets Corporation Storage Depot) alongside 'Route 66', the Davis-Monthan Army Air Base, near Tucson, and the equivalent US Navy installation at Goodyear, 20mi (32km) west of Phoenix, generated much interest. More recently, the famed AMARC (Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center) at Davis-Monthan AFB has been a mecca. Other storage locations have come into prominence, especially after the events of September 11, 2001, which forced many airlines to 'mothball' or retire airplanes surplus to requirements.
