THE BIGGEST airport in this country of 5.5 million people, just 20 kilometers from downtown Helsinki, HEL is home to both a colorful history and to Finnair (AY)-the Nordic nation's flag carrier and one of the world's oldest airlines. It was the end of World War II. Commercial aviation in Finland had been underway since the 1923, when Consul Bruno Otto Lucander had founded Aero O/Y (the future Finnair). It was obvious that Malmi Airport, in service since 1936 in a district of Helsinki, was already too small for the rate at which air travel was growing. So, plans were hatched for a new airport in the capital.
