We were eastbound at 39,000ft a little south of Tehran, Iran.The sun lay low on the horizon behind us and the sky ahead was dark. When I checked in with the Tehran controller after a frequency change, the man on the ground wished me a Merry Christmas. The well-wishing took me by surprise. His English was impeccable, but I didn't think anyone in Iran celebrated Christmas. And, considering the tensions that have existed between the USA and Iran for so many years, such a comment was completely unexpected.
