Gatwick Runway Contract Won

London gatwick Airport has awarded civil engineering contractor VolkerFitzpatrick a contract to resurface its single runway, as part of the airport's Hbillion (US$1.6bn) investment programme. As the world's busiest single-runway airport, Gatwick ensures that resurfacing occurs every eleven years. Around 65,000 tonnes of asphalt will be used to improve an area of 4,30S,000sq ft (400,000m2) and approximately 1,900 runway and taxiway lights, fed by 329 miles (530km) of electrical cabling, will also be replaced. The work will be done over night so that passenger flights, of which there can be up to 53 per hour, are not disrupted. Head of Airfield Capital Projects, David Wilson, states: "With an excellent safety record and extensive experience of working in complex airfield environments, VolkerFitzpatrick will help drive capital efficiency and quality."
