Approved by the Chinese Government in January 2002 as the first major public project in the region to involve foreign designers, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport was developed by the team of Arup and design consultants Llewelyn Davies. With an entire project time of less than four years, the $200 million airport opened in December 2004. As a new gateway to China's western provinces, the airport provides the Chongqing area with a much-needed expansion of aviation services. Chongqing municipality - one of the world's most populous areas with 31 million residents and nearly six million living in its urban core - has served as an increasingly important industrial centre in China. The airport will initially handle seven million passengers per year, with plans to increase capacity by over 200 percent to 25 million in the long term. Whilst air traffic is expected to be predominantly domestic, the terminal's scale means that it could eventually handle international flights too.
